Surfing in Fuerteventura

The north of Fuerteventura is home to some of the best surf spots in the Canary Islands, with waves and conditions for every level. This guide covers the most outstanding beaches, from beginner-friendly breaks to challenging reef waves favoured by locals.

Surf spots

Fuerteventura is no secret in the surfing world. Known as the “European Hawaii”, it has earned its place on the global surf map thanks to its consistent Atlantic swells, diverse breaks and near-perfect conditions throughout the year. The north of the island is where the action is — a stretch of coastline that delivers everything from gentle beach breaks ideal for beginners to powerful reef waves that challenge even the most experienced surfers.

The north and west coast comes alive in winter, when Atlantic swells are at their most powerful and consistent. In summer, the east coast takes over, offering cleaner and more manageable conditions as the swell direction shifts.

Whether you are just starting out or looking for your next great wave, this guide will take you through the best surf spots in the north of Fuerteventura.

Moro Beach
Consistent and powerful waves, mainly left. Sandy and rocky seabed. Advanced level. Access via the FV-1 road into the Corralejo Dunes Natural Park, following signs to Playa del Moro.

Entubadera Beach
Fast, hollow waves, mainly right. Sandy and rocky seabed. Advanced level. Access via the FV-1 into the Natural Park, following signs to Playa de la Entubadera.

El Burro Beach
Consistent and powerful waves, mainly left. Sandy and rocky seabed. Advanced level. Follow the FV-1 north from Corralejo past the dunes.

Isla de Lobos
Fast and hollow waves, mainly right. Rocky seabed. Advanced level only. Accessible by water taxi from Corralejo pier. Boats drop surfers directly at the peak and collect them at an agreed time — bring only your board and wetsuit. Conditions can be demanding and there is no support nearby, so exercise extreme caution.

Bristol Beach
Consistent and powerful waves, mainly left. Sandy seabed. Advanced level. Follow the FV-1 north from Corralejo.

Punta Elena
Consistent waves of moderate size, both left and right. Rocky seabed. Intermediate to advanced. Located in Corralejo on Calle Poris — look for corridor-style access between the houses, next to Sunset Bar or the Punta Elena restaurant. Study the entry carefully due to rocks — follow other surfers if in doubt.

Punta Blanca
Powerful and challenging waves, mainly right. Rocky seabed. Advanced level. Head north to Majanicho, take the path on the left side of the village facing the sea, pass El Hierro Beach and continue for 15 minutes. Check current and tide conditions before going.

El Hierro
Consistent and powerful waves, mainly right. Sandy and rocky seabed. Advanced level. From Majanicho, follow the road to the west side of the village for about 5 minutes.

Majanicho Consistent and less crowded waves, mainly right. Sandy and rocky seabed. Intermediate to advanced. From Lajares, follow the road to Majanicho and head 500 metres to the east of the village.

La Caleta
Consistent and moderate waves, mainly right. Rocky seabed. All levels, though beginners should ask about the rocky peaks before entering. From Corralejo, take the dirt road to the west of town towards the wind turbines — approximately 15 minutes drive before reaching Majanicho.

Esquinzo Beach
Consistent waves of moderate size, mainly right. Sandy seabed. All levels, but beginners should only surf at low tide — at mid or high tide the wave becomes fast and tubular. From El Cotillo, take the unpaved road past the cliff beaches, count at least 6 beaches and continue for another 10 minutes. GPS recommended as it can be hard to locate.

El Cotillo Beach
Consistent waves of moderate size, both left and right. Sandy seabed. All levels, though beginners should stick to low tide conditions. From El Cotillo, take the unpaved road to the left facing the sea — 5 minutes along the path you will find a series of small cliff beaches. Head to the one with the most parked cars for the best conditions.
